A very simple DIY that can be really good to complete with your children can be DIY Bookmarks.  Although some of you may say that reading actual physical books is dead due to the popularity of the e-reader devices, I believe there is still a call for bookmarks.

There are some less obvious uses for these bookmarks that may not spring first to mind.  These paper clip based bookmarks can easily be used as page markers.

  • These page markers can be used in your journal or diary to mark the day today or where you have written your to do list.
  • If you are studying the page markers could be used to identify where certain important texts or diagrams are that you need to refer to again later.
  • Children’s reading bookmark, if you have young children you will know that they are sent home with a reading book that they need to sit and read each evening.  These bookmarks can be used to mark where they have got to in their reading book.
  • You could sort your paperwork where different bundles of papers are grouped under a bookmark that identify what they are easily.

Button bookmarks

The simplest of the bookmark ideas is to glue a fun or colourful button to the top of your paperclip.  There are such a wide variety of buttons on the market.  Personally I would use a glue gun to fix the button to the top of the paperclip.

Ribbon bookmarks

If you are looking for a less bulky bookmark option then a simple ribbon bookmark may be more appealing.  These are particularly useful if you are using more than one bookmark to identify several areas within one book or journal.  Simply take a piece of ribbon and tie it looped around the paperclip.  By using different colours or patterns on the ribbon you can have simple markers.

Flower bookmarks

There are so many ways that you can make flowers and in so many mediums.  The simplest would be felt flowers as they hold their shape and are really basic to make.  More luxurious designs can be achieved by creating them out of ribbon.  Even paper can be used to create flowers of varying designs.  Have a look on www.YouTube.com for some tutorials to follow along and then just add your flower to the end of your bookmark.  A whole range could be made in different colours or mediums to help you identify different paperwork.

Clay figure bookmarks

If you are a talented model maker you could make a miniature clay item that can be added to the top of you paperwork to help identify your bookmark.  I have seen people make replica food items like biscuits or cakes in clay which are really fun.  I have also see people make miniature animals or animal heads.

Even if you are not particularly talented at making models a simple heart or flower shape could be moulded or cut out in clay and added to the paperclips.

Regardless of which design you decide to add to your bookmark they all start life as a giant paperclip.  These are available on Amazon

Then your chosen design can be glued to the top of the paperclip.  Strong glue like from a glue gun are perfect for securing them.  Ribbon or fabric flowers can be sewn on for extra strength.  Also the clay designs can be pressed onto the paper clip prior to drying to help attach them.

Hopefully you have been inspired into making some bookmarks of your own.  I would love to see your designs and what you use them for.
