Welcome to my quick guide to naming your business. 

When you start a craft business the first obstacle that you will come across is trying to think of a name under which to trade. There are a few things to bear in mind when naming your business.

First, spelling!

If customers are to find your business when searching online, They need to be able to spell your business correctly. Therefore, it is a good idea to think of a business name that is simple to spell without spelling variations.

Competition

Next up, you will want to do a search to check that there are no other businesses already trading under your preferred name.  Otherwise customers will be directed to a potential competitor instead of you When looking for your products.

URL Appearance

Another thing to bear in mind if using multiple words to create your business is how the name will appear.  When typed in a website URL how will your business name appear?  Some words when place next to each other can display an entirely different name.  Often without you realising.

Creating a name

If you are really struggling to think of business names, there are a few creative ideas for naming your business.

Some people try to incorporate their type of business in their business name. For example, If they sell glass items, They may try to enter include the word glass in their business name.

Other people get inspiration from their surroundings. For example, if they live in a particular village, Some people use the village name incorporated their business name.

Others include a favourite animal for food into their business name.  Or incorporate their family or pet’s names into their business name.

It can be very helpful to create a short list of names which can then be used in a poll with friends and relatives to choose the preferred name.

Next Steps after naming your business

Once you have decided upon your name, it is advisable to then create social media accounts under these profiles.  You do not necessarily have to use all of the social media accounts. However it will protect this name until you decide to use it in the future.
